What's Happening

WasteLess

The WasteLess Business Competition is open to all (485+) business within the South Street Headhouse District. The winner will achieve the greatest reduction of utility usage over a 3 month competition period (May/June/July 2010) vs. the same months in 2009 The Urban Green Partnership and our partners will provide participating businesses with general guidelines and specific resources to increase utility efficiency. The winners and sponsors will be recognized via press releases, announcements/signage at GreenFest 2010, recognition plaques, paid announcements in print media, recognition on various supporting websites, and more. GreenFest Philly has received a lot of positive media attention, which we will use as a platform to announce and celebrate the WasteLess participants, winners, and sponsors.

Benefits to our sponsors:
-       This is an opportunity for our sponsors to publicly align themselves with an organization and competition that address energy/utility efficiency in a way that all business owners and residents can understand.
-       As Philadelphia strives to become the greenest city in the United States, and as utility prices increase, energy/utility efficiency will continue to receive more notice in household/board room discussion. This is an opportunity for Utility companies to be seen as an ally against these natural/economic forces, rather than the enemy.

What we are asking of our sponsors:
-          Donation of prizes (See Prizes Below)
-          Contribution of knowledge toward general strategies for utility efficiency. This will be included in information that is provided to the participants.
-          1-3 statements/quotes of why your organization supports the project to be used on our website and for press releases.
-          Financial contribution (in addition to donation of prizes) toward all or part of our $30,000 budget for the competition.

Specific goals (and prizes)
-          GRAND PRIZE – Greatest Reducer of total energy use of electric, gas, and water.*( Prize: Free utilities for 12 months)
-          Greatest reducer for ELECTRIC (Prize: Free electricity for 3 months)**
-          Greatest Reducer for GAS (Prize: Free gas for 3 months)**
-          Greatest Reducer for WATER (Prize: Free water for 3 months)**

* Three separate utilities will be aggregated using and weighted according to BTU output.
** If the greatest reducer for a specific utility is the same as the grand prize winner, then the prize will go the 2nd place reducer for that specific utility.
*** Prizes will be capped at a maximum dollar value incase a large business (like a supermarket) wins.

OPTIONAL ADDITIONAL GOALS IF SPONSORS ARE INTERSTED
-          Greatest utility reduction for RESTARAUNTS/BARS
-          Greatest utility reduction for GROCERY STORES (All sizes)
-          Greatest utility reduction for BANKS
-          Greatest utility reduction for DRY CLEANERS
-          Any specific category that a sponsor wants

Why are we focusing on Greatest Reduction rather than the most efficient?
-          Greatest reduction forces competitors to look at themselves to understand what they are doing and how they can most improve.
-          Focusing on the greatest reduction gives the worst offenders a leg up and encourages them to get involved because they may actually have a chance to win. This will do the most for our environment because the least efficient businesses have the greatest potential to save energy. We expect that the businesses that are already eco-conscious will participate anyway.
